這是一首印度民謠，原自印度東北亞撒省（Assam）的格羅族（Garo tribe）。 亞撒省北鄰喜馬拉亞山脈，該省居民多數是山地原住民，其中三分之二居民信印度教，四分之一信回教。 格羅族中有許多人受宣教士感化成基督徒，但多數是信奉他們傳統的宗教。

對格羅族民來講，要跟隨耶穌，許多人必須脫離家族親人，放棄繼承權，被社會擯棄，朋友鄙視。 要唱出：「我已經決定要跟隨耶穌，永不回頭。」走上這不歸路，是需要無比的勇氣。

1960年夏，浸信會全球大會時，一位來自亞撒省的代表，聽到這首歌時，證實它是當地信徒決志時的宣告。

這首歌原文僅兩節，1959年刊印在聖詩集時，由柯拉克（John Clark）加上第三節，並由芮諾士配上和聲。嗣後，莊遜（Norman E. Johnson），湯默士（Eugene Thomas），及巴樂斯（Cliff Barrows ）等各自將該曲調改編。
